The first round of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 has only two matches left, and the results of both these matches — between Pakistan versus Ireland and West Indies versus United Arab Emirates (UAE) on Sunday — will decide about who will advance to the quarter-final round.
From Pool A, the co-hosts New Zealand, Australia, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh have already qualified for the quarter-final stage, whereas India and South Africa are the only two teams from the Pool B who have advanced to the next round. This means that there are two more spots up for grabs and three teams — Pakistan, West Indies and Ireland — will be vying to grab their chances.
For Pakistan to go to the next round, they will have to win against Ireland. They have six points from five matches and a better Net Run Rate (NRR) compared to the West Indies and Ireland. Ironically, all three sides have their NRR in minus.
For Ireland to go through, they will have to register a win against Pakistan. In such scenario, Pakistan will be eliminated and the West Indies will go through to the quarter-finals.
And for the West Indies, who have only two wins and three losses from five matches, the chances look a little bleak. The Cyclone Pam may dash all their hopes and if their match is affected — washed out or ending up without any result — they will be knocked out and Pakistan and Ireland will go through to the quarter-final, irrespective of the result of their match.
Here is a table that talks about all possibilities in tomorrow’s matches in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015:
