Pune and Rajkot have emerged as the cities to represent two new franchises or teams in the Indian Premier League (IPL) during the period 2016-2107. Sanjeev Goenka’s New Rising company has bagged the Pune team while Intex, an Indian smartphones and IT Accessories manufacturer, won the bid for Rajkot. The two new teams will replace suspended Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Rajasthan Royals (RR). Both the teams are currently serving two-year suspension.
The Governing Council of the IPL met at a Hotel in New Delhi to complete the “walk-in bid” process and Pune and Rajkot were finalised as the two new franchises. Apart from Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) President Shashank Manohar, BCCI Secretary Anurag Thakur and IPL Chairman Rajeev Shukla were also present. The representatives of the interested organizations, who purchased the bid forms following the Invitation to Tender (ITT) put out by the board, were also present.
After the interim report of the Supreme Court-appointed Justice Lodha Committee on the spot- fixing and betting scandal in the IPL 2013, BCCI Working Committee decided to replace CSK and RR for the upcoming two seasons.
Pune was earlier part of the IPL and was represented by Pune Warriors India- a franchise owned by Sahara Adventure Sports Limited. The team after participating for two seasons, 2011 and 2012, withdraw from the IPL following financial differences with the BCCI.
