The ICC World Cup 2015 reaches the last four and expectations have mounted sky high in India as the team has gone on to have a sterling run the tournament. However, it was South Africa who were the pace-setters in the tournament after their spinners took the Proteas to their first World Cup semi-final. Sri Lankans, riding on the back of Kumar Sangakkara’s astounding form were slight favourites coming into the contest but the swansong of the former Sri Lankan captain ended on a whimper. Martin Guptill led New Zealand to yet another semi-final while Australia braved a fired-up Pakistan to go one step closet to the finals. Here is an overview of all the teams and the two semifinals fixtures going in the last four. New Zealand will get to stage one semifinal while Australia will stage the other. The final will be played in the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). India will be facing an Australian side who were utterly dominant in the tri-nation series and the Tests that preceded the tournament. The form of the defending champions though, has been in stark contrast of of the tepid form they have shown over the last year.
Australia have been pummeling teams in some style and on paper, with a partisan home support, are the favourites to win the tie. Only New Zealand exposed the chinks in their armour in the nail-biting encounter in the group stages. Mitchell Starc and Glenn Maxwell have played starring roles while the others have also lifted their hand up and performed whenever a situation presented itself.
South Africa are on a mission to get rid of the unwanted tag of faltering where it matters and AB de Villiers and his star-studded team are gunning to land their country’s maiden crown. New Zealand are the pundits’ favourites and have played like champions so far. From a last-gasp finish to a posting huge totals, the team has gone the distance — literally and metaphorically — as they would also look to soak in all the inspiration they can from a packed Eden Park. Below are the two semifinal games with the schedule.
Semifinal 1 — March 24th — New Zealand vs South Africa at 6.30 a.m IST, Venue: Eden Park, Auckland
Semifinal 2 — March 26th — Australia vs India at 9.00 a.m IST, Venue: Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG), Sydney
